Connecting youth to nature
'Let us leave a splendid legacy for our children... once destroyed, nature's beauty cannot be repurchased at any price.'
— Ansel Adams

The Call of the Coast
The ComeHike Outreach project is built on three core pillars: to inspire, uplift and educate through the power of hiking. Recently, these values came to life during a coastal initiative championed by our Outreach Coordinator, Ella du Plessis. Her mission was to bridge the gap between local youth and the untamed magic of the great outdoors.

The James House Coastal Adventure
The destination was Grotto Bay, a stretch of coastline renowned for its striking natural features. Gathering at the trailhead were eight enthusiastic teenagers (ages 14-17) and two teachers from James House. Equipped with backpacks full of snacks, fruit and juice, the group ventured onto the trail with immense enthusiasm and endless curiosity.

A Living Classroom
The coastal trail quickly transformed into an immersive, open-air laboratory. The young hikers explored the unique freshwater spring that gives Grotto Bay its name, before diving into the rich geological tapestry of the shoreline.

The teenagers examined the stark transitions between granite formations, dolerite sand and ancient limestone. They also learned how the cold, nutrient-rich Benguela current fuels a massive diversity of local marine life. This hands-on encounter sparked deep interest and curiosity among the group.

Art, Community, and Lasting Impressions
Nature has a unique way of unlocking creative expression. During a rest stop, several artists-in-the-making emerged, crafting impressive artwork directly into the sand.

Following the hike, the group returned to the vehicles to conclude their adventure in classic style, enjoying a well-earned feast of traditional boerewors rolls. The day left a lasting impression, with the teenagers already looking forward to their next outdoor adventure.
