Dark Gorge with Tony Brown (25 Apr 2026)

GRADE 3C, MEDIUM / FAST PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

A hidden gem, Dark Gorge is an alternate route up the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and is reserved for the more experienced and adventurous hiker. A loose rocky section towards the top of the gorge limits the size of the group to ten. After a break at Pulpit Rock we will traverse around Devil's Peak, pay a visit to Woodstock Cave and then rejoin the contour path towards the King's Blockhouse. From here we will drop down onto the jeep track and make our way back to Newlands Forest.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Saturday.

13 Peaks Part 1: Lion's Head with Helen Gosnell - FULLY BOOKED, waiting list only (27 Apr 2026)

GRADE 2B+, MEDIUM PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a public holiday Monday.

Part 1/12: We'll kick off our challenge on Freedom Day which seems appropriate. Our hike will follow the gentle path along the Lion's rump to the northern slopes of Lion's Head. After a brief visit to the Kramat and the restored cannons, we'll ascend Lion's Head from the north. Our descent route will be the usual one. Our route for the day will end at the lower cable station. The hike is about 8 km with 420 m elevation gain. Those not joining the challenge can end the hike at the bottom of Lion's Head. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town. We will complete the challenge over 7 months. All hikes are open to everyone, whether or not you are doing the challenge. Since not everyone will be available for every peak, Helen will set up a dedicated WhatsApp group for those doing the challenge to coordinate catch up hikes.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Monday.

GRADE 4B, MEDIUM / FAST PACE

A steady climb up a good path gets us to the lookout point in Silvermine. Another 45 minutes takes us up to the mast where we will either have lunch at the caves or at the viewpoint overlooking Hout Bay (weather dependent). We return on the same path. The hike entails 900 m of ascent, so fitness is required.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Sunday.

Spilhaus Buttress to Reserve Peak with Carmen Morris (7 Jun 2026)

GRADE 4D, FAST PACE

We’ll head along the jeep track and up through the forest for just over 2 km before starting a steep, exposed scramble up Spilhaus Buttress, which requires advanced movement over rock. We'll top out on the jeep track just before De Villiers Dam, then pass the Overseers Cottage and head up to the right toward Reserve Peak. There we’ll take a break and soak in the views before beginning the return journey through Ash Valley. This is a fast-paced hike for those with solid scrambling experience, strong route-finding ability, and a good head for heights. Not suitable for beginners.

13 Peaks Part 3: Grootkop, Judas Peak with Helen Gosnell (7 Jun 2026)

GRADE 3B, MEDIUM PACE

Part 3/12: Depending on the vote today, we'll ascend either Corridor or Oudekraal Ravine, conveniently popping out at Grootkop, the first of 2 peaks for the day. After enjoying the view on the top, we’ll make our way back to the Apostles Path, continuing west towards Judas Peak, our second peak of the day. Our descent route will be either via Llandudno Ravine, or the Buttress, depending on the weather and the popular vote. This is a lovely hike on the Camps Bay side of the mountain with gorgeous views all round. We'll cover about 11 km with just over 800 m elevation gain and loss.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Sunday.

We follow the path past Camel Rock, De Villiers Dam, Woodhead Dam, then behind Hely Hutchinson Dam to the top of Skeleton Gorge. We return via the Hoerikwaggo Trail past the Overseers Hut and descend to the starting point via the Constantia Nek stairs.

GRADE 3C, MEDIUM / SLOW PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Tuesday public holiday.

Max 8 hikers. A classic route under the cable car with outstanding views to the north. The route is great for hikers who are looking to extend their scrambling abilities beyond a B+. There are some tough parts to scramble up, some exposure and at one point a step over. Having a head for heights is essential. Be prepared for a 700 m elevation gain. The descent will be via the Cable Car (R70 for over 60s, R280 for others).

Camps Bay to the Apostle Battery with Tony Brown (20 Jun 2026)

GRADE 3A, MEDIUM / SLOW PACE

This is an out-and-back linear hike in the shadows of the 12 Apostles Mountain Range. With a total distance of 16km over moderately flat terrain you will have plenty of opportunity to gaze at the stunning views over Victoria Drive and out to the South Atlantic Ocean. Our hike will take us around five hours, with a slightly longer than usual lunch break which will give you time to explore (at your own risk) the Apostles Battery, a WWII military base built between 1939 and 1945, before we return to our start/end point above Camps Bay.

Please earmark the Sunday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Saturday.

13 Peaks Part 5: Suther Peak with Helen Gosnell (26 Jul 2026)

GRADE 3B+, MEDIUM PACE

Part 5/12: The challenge today covers some road walking at the beginning and the end. Those not taking part in the challenge can cut those sections out and join in for Suther Peak by itself. Suther Peak has an easier and a more challenging variation. We'll decide on the variation by popular vote. Suther Peak is a gem on this side of the world and as you ascend you'll have lovely views of Table Mountain and Lion's Head and down over Sandy Bay. Once we are almost back down, we'll veer off to the right to head off towards East Fort, our end point for the day. Passing through Hout Bay, we'll be able to pick up a gelato or a cup of coffee (or both?). We'll cover 12 kms with 430 m elevation gain and 530m elevation loss.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Sunday.

Right Face – Arrow Face Traverse with Carmen Morris (2 Aug 2026)

GRADE 3D, FAST PACE

This route follows a high traverse across the upper face of Table Mountain, linking Right Face and Arrow Face ledges. The terrain is steep, exposed, and includes narrow footpaths with large drops, requiring precise footwork and confidence with technical terrain. This is a fast-paced, high-exposure route for hikers with advanced scrambling ability and prior experience on ledge traverses. Not suitable for beginners or those uncomfortable with heights.

13 Peaks Part 6: Chapman's Peak with Helen Gosnell (10 Aug 2026)

GRADE 3B, MEDIUM PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a public holiday Monday.

Part 6/12: Taking advantage of our Monday holiday, we'll spend a day in the mountains. We'll start off with a walk along the contour path to get to the Chapman's Peak fork. Chapman's Peak is a steady, and not too steep, climb with beautiful views. If we're lucky, we may even see some whales. Our descent will be via the same route, but we'll end at the Chapman's Peak trailhead. The hike is 9 km with 660 m elevation gain and 560 m loss. It is one of the gentler parts of this challenge. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary. Today's hike marks the halfway point of the challenge.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town.
Short but stiff ascent and descent. Thereafter easy hiking to two peaks with great mountain views of the Constantia and Hout Bay Valleys. Truly rewarding.

Muizenberg and St James Peaks with Rod and Fran Dicks (23 Aug 2026)

GRADE 2B, MEDIUM PACE

Leaving from Boyes Drive we hike steadily upwards on a good path to the ridge. From the ridge we turn south and head along and up to Muizenberg Peak. After having snacks, we drop down and along to St James Peak with views over False Bay. There is a 565 m elevation gain over the day so reasonable fitness is required. There is an option of adding Steenberg Peak should the group decide in favour. The route back mainly retraces our steps to Boyes Drive.

Please earmark the Saturday as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the Sunday.

13 Peaks Part 7: Noordhoek and Muizenberg Peaks with Helen Gosnell (29 Aug 2026)

GRADE 4B, MEDIUM / FAST PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Saturday.

Part 7/12: Today is a real doozy of a hike covering a lot of ground (16 kms, 945 m elevation gain and 819 m elevation loss). Our morning starts off with the ascent of Noordhoek Peak from the Hout Bay side. Once on the top, we'll duck into Silvermine for a totally different view as we descend on the Wagonwheel Trail to Silvermine Gate 2. From here, we will make short work of Muizenberg Peak before returning to Gate 1 at Silvermine to end today's section. The views today are fabulous. We'll start by looking out over the Atlantic, the middle section will be through Silvermine with views of the surrounding mountains and the end will be looking out over the Deep South. This is the toughest day of the challenge. Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

Postberg flower walk with Ella du Plessis (30 Aug 2026)

GRADE 3A+, MEDIUM / SLOW PACE

Please note that this hike date may change. It is subject to the availability of permits.

Max 20 hikers. An educational flower walk situated in the West Coast National Park. Every year there is an impressive display of wildflowers on our West Coast, where the dry and desolate region transforms into a carpet of splendour. Sightings of bontebok and zebra and others are not uncommon. There is one small hill near the start and another hill at lunchtime, nothing impossible… the rest is pretty much flat. The circular route is approximately 17 km, so some endurance is necessary. This is a permitted hike. The gate to the park opens at 7am. The entrance fee is R116, or free for Wild Card holders.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close the Friday before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

An ascent of Minor Peak using a compound route with some delightful scrambles. Some exposure in places so a reasonable head for heights is needed. Descent via upper and middle traverse with some connecting paths in between. Final descent using saddle path.

The Baths camping with Louise van Wyk (11 Sep 2026)

GRADE 2A+

The Baths hot springs was established in 1739 and maintains an old-world charm in a scenic rural setting. The water reaches 43ºC at the source. Besides the hot pools and mountain rock pools, there are also jacuzzis and a cold swimming pool to cool down. The camp sites are well shaded, with ablution facilities and electrical points. There are no kitchen facilities, so you need to be a self-sufficient camper. There is a lovely restaurant on the premises and a very basic shop that offers ice, wood, chips, ice cream, etc. We’ll be camping, braaiing and enjoying a dip in the hot water at night whilst watching the stars. There are two short, but steep hikes (1,8 km and 5 km respectively) offering beautiful views of the valley. Another bonus is that natural hot springs are known for health benefits including reducing pain and inflammation. More reason to join us!

India Venster Intro with Graeme Hope (13 Sep 2026)

GRADE 2C, SLOW PACE

This is a good opportunity for newer hikers to add this classic route up Table Mountain under the cable car with outstanding views to the north.

Please earmark Sunday 20 September as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on the 13th September.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close the Friday before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

13 Peaks Part 8: Silvermine River walk with Helen Gosnell (24 Sep 2026)

GRADE 1A, SLOW PACE

Please note that this hike takes place on a Thursday public holiday.

Part 8/12: Today is not about peak bagging, but rather it is a short linking stretch where we can slow down and smell the fynbos. We'll follow the River Trail in Silvermine pausing in the middle of the out and back route to have a picnic lunch (and a swim?) at the dam. Please note the later start time to tie in with lunch. [we start at 11 am]. The total distance is 5.5 km with a gentle 160 m up and down. Wild Card or entrance fee will be payable.

Please earmark the Saturday 26 September as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on 24 September.

GRADE 4C, MEDIUM / FAST PACE

A somewhat feared but actually well-maintained (and beautiful) route up to the 12 Apostles spine. The ascent is not hectic, but we will need to scramble over the remnants of a landslide from the 90's, hence this is for experienced hikers only. Once on top we will seek the shade of Tranquillity Cracks before a descent via Woody Ravine.

Please earmark Sunday 25 October as an alternative hiking day if poor weather is forecast on 18 October.

This is a fun alternative route up Table Mountain front face. It involves sections of scrambling up ledges, overgrown sections on the path and loose stones underfoot. This route is ideal for those who enjoy sections of scrambling up the mountain but want to do it at a slower pace. The highlight is the step-over near the top that makes for a great photo opportunity. Once on top we'll hike to the Cable Car for a ride down. (Additional cost for a ticket on own account).

As you climb, you are rewarded with dramatic views of the Atlantic Seaboard and the iconic Blinkwater Needle. The upper part of the route becomes overgrown and exposed to ledges with drop-offs, and after a final scramble, we'll emerge onto the "Back Table". Due to its difficulty and exposure, the route is not recommended for novice hikers. Descent is via Diagonal or Kasteelspoort. High wind or wet weather will cancel.

Bookings open 2 months before the hike. Bookings close the Friday before the hike at 18h00. No smoking on the hike.

13 Peaks Part 12: Table Mountain Contour Path with Helen Gosnell (13 Dec 2026)

GRADE 2A+, MEDIUM PACE

Part 12/12: This is the final linking section taking us back to Signal Hill. We will do this by walking the contour path rather than the road, all the way along the front face of Table Mountain. Once at the end, we'll hop over the busy road intersection and continue along the path, past Lion's Head and along the Lion's Rump to our final point, the Signal Hill beacon. This walk takes us around 2 sides of the City Bowl, offering views of the end point at the beginning and of the start point at the end. It is about 8km of gently undulating path (except for the short, sharp ascent to the contour and the short, sharp descent from the contour). Car shuttling or Uber will be necessary.

About the 13 peaks: trail runner Ryan Sandes developed a circular route that covers 13 iconic peaks in Cape Town.
